1994, the band's earliest members were vocalist Doug Robb and guitarist Dan Estrin, who met each other at a high-school battle of the bands competition. The two chose hook up, adding bassist Markku Lappalainen and drummer Chris Hesse to form a quartet. They started playing dates at local clubs and self-released their first album, 1998's They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To. By this point Hoobastank had developed a strong reputation in Southern California. This attracted interest from Island Records, who subsequently signed the band in 2000. By this stage, Hoobastank had developed a strong reputation in Southern California. Hoobastank released their self-titled debut album in November 2001. The first single was "Crawling in the Dark" which was a breakthrough hit reaching #68 on the Billboard Hot 100, #3 on the Modern Rock chart and, #7 on the Mainstream Rock chart. . The second single "Running Away" was even more successful, catapulting the album to platinum status as #25 on the Billboard 200 album charts and #1 on the Billboard Heatseeker chart. Hoobastank toured in the Asia and Europe to promote the album, and has a result, the effort was also an international success. The band entered the studio in 2003 with producer Howard Benson who previously produced records by P.O.D., Blindside, Cold, and The Crystal Method. However, recording was halted for a month when Dan Estrin was seriously injured in a freak mini bike accident in August. Estrin had recovered by October, and the band's second album, The Reason, was released in December 2003. It was another huge success thanks to a title track that was featured on the hit sitcom Friends and reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the US and World Modern Rock chart. Now, Hoobastank was a truly worldwide phenomenon.
Hoobastank's third album, Every Man for Himself, was released in May 2006 and debuted at #12 on the Billboard chart, but yielded no hit singles. The band followed with the release of their fourth album, For(N)ever, in January 2009, keeping their pledge to fans to keep recording music that is as vital as it is riveting.
