Huey music biography continued...
was already a hit on the streets, but his career really took off when his older brother brought in a connected local manger who booked Huey into clubs all over town. The young rapper soon started to forge relationships with DJs, promoters and the like, working to establish him as a force in clubs and on the radio. Ultimately, like Nelly and Chingy before him, he carved out a niche for himself with two local gems, "Oh" and later "Pop, Lock & Drop It." Impressed by the buzz that Huey had created with his close knit team (he heard "Pop, Lock & Drop It" and saw the dance in the club), TJ Chapman (of TJ's DJ's) arranged a meeting/session with Mickey "MeMpHiTz" Wright (President of the HiTz Committee Inc. and also VP of A&R at Jive Records who had signed J-Kwon and T Pain). The result was Huey's first mixtape-- Unsigned Hype that was gobbled up on the streets and in colleges.
The first artist to be released from the Hitz Committee, the young prodigy was uprooted from his hometown for favor of a condo in downtown Atlanta, but his loyalty to St. Louis remained intact.
T he Diary of Huey: Pre Notebook Paper was soon released as a mixtape and offered a hint of what was to come with the heavily anticipated full debut album - The Notebook Paper. Laced with guest appearances from the likes of T Pain and Lloyd, the debut album, released in mid-2007, was a moving testament to life's ups and downs through Huey's young eyes. Bound by his love for the streets and everything therein, critics hailed it as straightforward and true, and fans flocked to it. Huey's lead single, "Pop, Lock & Drop It," established a convincing flow over a classic St. Louis cadence. Other Huey songs like "Adidas" and "What'cha Lookin At?" were equally well-received. Still early in his career, Huey carries himself like a seasoned veteran. His old chums would be proud of how he is carrying the streets of St. Louis into the next millennium with his sharp-witted rhymes and thumping beats.
