Idol judge, Simon Cowell, who was struck by an idea to assemble classic singers into one solid quarto after listening to a duet by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman. After conducting a worldwide search, Il Divo (Divine Performer) was formed with American tenor David Miller, popular French singer Sébastien Izambard, Swiss tenor Urs Buhler, and Spanish baritone Carlos Marin. Although it took some time to get used to each other, the group's self-titled debut album, which was released in April of 2005 became a huge international hit, featuring a diverse play list that included a cover of the Toni Braxton hit "Unbreak My Heart" and the Frank Sinatra standard "My Way," as well as "Nella Fantasia," a newly arranged -- with vocals -- version of "Gabriel's Oboe" from Ennio Morricone's score for The Mission. The immediate success of the group validated Cowell's hunch, giving music lovers the joyful experience of discovering mature talent in a new way.



Following their initial success, the band also recorded a Christmas album titled 'Christmas Collection' in 2005, then circulated DVD 'Encore' in 2006 as well as releasing the hopeful Ancora. Handled by music industry pros like Per Magnusson, David Kreuger and Steve Mac, this album flouted convention at every turn. For instance, in U.S. version, their rendition of Mariah Carey's 'Hero' was twisted into a classical tune while 'I Believe in You (Je Crois en Toi)' was made into a harmonious collaboration with Celine Dion. In 2006, Il Divo also released Voices, a collection of songs released at the time of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Their next album, Siempre, was released in November 2006 in the United States and one week later in the rest of the world. Three weeks after its release, it was number one in the United World Chart, above the Beatles, Eminem and U2. In just four short years, Il Divo went from being a clever concept to a group immersed in accolades and worldwide fame.
