(drums) and DJ Kilmore (turntables). Former members of the band include DJ Lyfe and Alex Katunich (a.k.a. Dirk Lance). Their first major-label release was the six-song EP Enjoy Incubus, which came out in early 1997 and consisted of previous demos that were revamped in the studio. Later in the year, their first full-length album, S.C.I.E.N.C.E., was released. Incubus hit the road with a passion, opening for bands like Korn, Primus, 311, Sublime, and Unwritten Law. By the summer of 1998, the band had amassed enough of a following to land a spot on that year's Ozzfest tour. Following this, Incubus returned to the studio and delivered their follow-up album, Make Yourself, in late 1999. Then the group went right back out on the road, where their stint on the 2000 Ozzfest helped create a whole new audience for their music. With Incubus songs like "Pardon Me" and "Stellar," Make Yourself eventually pushed past the double-platinum mark.
Incubus also reached multi-platinum sales with successive albums, including Morning View, and A Crow Left of the Murder. According to lead singer Brandon Boyd: "Now on our sixth album, we (Incubus) have been writing music together long enough that there is a sense of perspective available that has only come to us with time. Some of our earlier works, though pure and even fun at times, lent to a sense of disorganization; a readily apparent lack of focus in my opinion. I have always said, "Yeah, we suck...but we're really good at it!" In their latest album, Light Grenades, the band took a new direction. According to Boyd: "Working, once again, with Super Producer, 'Brendan O'Brien', we spent more time crafting, and sculpting these songs than we ever have historically." The result was an unqualified success-- Light Grenades debuted number 1 on the Billboard charts, the first time Incubus has ever sat atop the album charts. As they continue to grow together, we can expect even greater efforts to follow.
