rap career in 1994 with the group Cash Money Click, taking his stage name from his initials. His debut album, Venni Vetti Vecci, was released in 1999 and contained such hit singles as "Holla Holla" and "Daddy's Little Baby" a duet with Ronald Isley. It earned platinum status in the year it was released. Signed to producer Irv Gotti's Def Jam-affiliated Murder Inc, Ja Rule came out with Rule 3:36 in 2000. It featured collaborations with female R&B singers, and a string of radio-friendly hits ("Between Me and You," "Put It on Me," "I Cry"). Pain Is Love (2001) followed the same recipe, serving up a few rap-R&B hybrids for the singles ("I'm Real," "Livin' It Up," "Always on Time," "Down Ass Chick") and rounding the album out with hardcore rap. In 2002, at the height of his popularity, Ja Rule was featured in several of his fellow rapper's songs, and came out with his fourth album, The Last Temptation. The album again paired him with R&B vocalists for its singles, this time with Bobby Brown ("Thug Lovin'") and Ashanti ("Mesmerize"). Although it did not sell as well as his previous album, The Last Temptation was certified 2x platinum and demonstrated that Ja Rule had discovered a winning combination of genres.



In 2003, after the escalation of a feud with 50 Cent, Ja Rule fought back with Blood in My Eye, his last effort for Murder Inc. It peaked at #6 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Ja Rule's sixth studio album R.U.L.E. was released in November 2004, with a lead single titled "Wonderful" featuring R. Kelly and Ashanti. 2007's The Mirror, did not fare as well commercially, but with the fracas with 50 Cent behind him, Ja Rule was free and clear to devote his energy to the thing he knows and loves best—his music.
