James Hillier Blount was born on February 22, 1974 in Tidworth, Wiltshire, England into a family with a long history of military service since 995 A.D. He completed his education at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and then served the British Army as commissioned officer in the Life Guards regiment. He soon rose to the rank of Captain serving as an armored reconnaissance officer in the NATO peacekeeping force in Kosovo where he kept his guitar secured to the outside of his tank. James completed the song "No Bravery" while serving in Kosovo. He left the army in 2002 to become a full time musician.

Blunt was discovered by singer/songwriter Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes),who has worked with Pink and Christina Aguilera, at the South by Southwest conference in 2003 and signed him to her Custard label. He moved to Los Angeles to record the album Back to Bedlam released by Atlantic/Custard in 2005. Blunt's debut UK single was "High" which only became a Top 10 hit once the song was featured in the Italian Vodafone commercial. The second single "Wiseman" only reached # 44 on the charts.

It was the third single "You're Beautiful" that gained the singer massive recognition. The song reached the # 1 position in the UK after 6 weeks. The song was later released to US radio stations in the autumn of 2005 and quickly rose the charts to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified 9x platinum in the UK and 2x platinum in the US.
