James music biography continued...
in 1982, when Paul Gilbertson (guitar), Jim Glennie (bass), and Gavan Whelan (drums) met Tim Booth (vocals) at Manchester University and asked him to join their fledgling band. After building up a substantial fan base thanks to perpetual concerts, James was offered a record deal with indie label the Factory in 1983. After coming out with an EP (Jimone 1983), they were proclaimed by Morrissey to be the "next Smiths" and followed with a freshman LP, Stutter, in 1986 on Sire. With constant touring and positive reviews, the band would begin to make an impression on the industry when they signed with the indie label Rough Trade and released the moderately successful "Sit Down, as well as the live album One Man Clapping, which climbed to number one on the indie charts. But their big breakthrough wouldn't come until spring 1991, when a newly reconstituted line-up released a re-recorded version of "Sit Down" — now boasting a contemporary baggy beat. The tune climbed to number two on the U.K. charts and received heavy rotation on U.S. modern rock radio, catapulting the album Gold Mother to near the top of the charts as well. After a disappointing follow-up, James released the album Laid, which garnered some of the band's best reviews. While the album was ignored in the U.K., it was an alternative rock hit in the U.S. on the strength of the title track, which became a crossover hit, and put James on the map on both sides of the pond.
James continued to perform and record throughout the 90s, though their albums were mostly only distributed in the U.K. In 2001, frontman Tim Booth announced his departure from the band he founded nearly 20 years before, and James called it quits soon after. They couldn't, however, stay away from music for very long, and in 2007 reformed to tour in support of the double-disc compilation Fresh as a Daisy: The Singles. The following year saw the release of Hey Ma, James' tenth studio album. Constantly reinvigorating their line-up, James remains relevant to this day, and it's their fans that simply refuse to sit down.
