Janet Jackson music biography continued...

from the Jackson family title and the beginning of her career as a frequent chart topper. Rhythm Nation 1814 became the best selling album of 1990 with the number one hit singles "Miss You Much", "Escapade", "Rhythm Nation", "Black Cat", and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)". Revealing a sexier image, she scored the major hits "That's the Way Love Goes", "If", and "You Want This" off of the 1993 album, janet.. Maintaining a prominent presence in the late 1990s Janet released The Velvet Rope and progressed into the new millennium with All For You and Damita Jo.

Born May 16, 1966 in Gary, Indiana, Janet was persuaded into a singing career by her forceful father Joseph. Her self-titled debut album was released in 1982 and reached the Top Ten on the Billboard R&B chart featuring the singles "Young Love", "Say You Do", and "Come Give Your Love to Me". Her follow-up album, Dream Street was a major disappointment which led critics to deny Janet of her talent. However, Janet proved them wrong in 1986 with the release of the smash album Control which generated the hit singles "What Have You Done for Me Lately", "Nasty", and "Let's Wait Awhile". Prior to the release of the third album, she fired her father as manager gaining the independence she wished for. Rhythm Nation 1814 saw release in 1989 and was the first album to spawn seven Top Five Billboard hits. The video for "Rhythm Nation" earned Janet her first Grammy Award for Best Music Video, Long Form in 1990. In 1992, Jackson left A&M signing a $32 million contract with Virgin Records and issuing janet. the following year. Janet's hot new image was apparent in the video for the number one lead single "That's the Way Love Goes", which successfully introduced the sexual mood and tone of the album. The single won a Grammy Award for Best R&B song in 1994. A month after the release of janet., Jackson made her film debut co-starring in Poetic Justice with Tupac Shakur.

A collaboration with her brother Michael, the "King of Pop", resulted in the hit single "Scream" in 1995. The accompanying space-age inspired video which is ranked as the most expensive ever made won a Grammy Award for Best Music Video. In 1996, Janet issued Design of a Decade 1986-1996, a compilation of her greatest hits, under her former label A&M. Meanwhile the singer renewed her contract with Virgin for a reported $80 million and began recording her next project. The Velvet Rope, a controversial album that discusses social issues such as AIDS, domestic abuse, and homophobia debuted in 1997. Although not as commercially successful as her previous albums, it featured the number one lead single "Together Again", as well as the hit tracks "Got 'Til It's Gone" and "I Get Lonely". In 1999, Janet's vocals appeared on several hit tracks by other artists, notably Shaggy's "Luv Me, Luv Me", Busta Rhymes' "What's It Gonna Be", and Blackstreet's "Gilfriend/Boyfriend". In 2000, she landed a major role in the film Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, alongside Eddie Murphy. Her new single "Doesn't Really Matter" was featured in the film and on the soundtrack.

Her seventh album, All For You, issued in 2001, debuted at number one owing its success to the chart topping title track which held the first spot for seven weeks. "Someone to Call my Lover" followed peaking in the Top Five and by the end of the year the album won a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Prior to the release of Damita Jo, Jackson performed at the 2004 Super Bowl XXXVIII half time show causing an uproar when her right breast was exposed during her duet with Justin Timberlake as a result of a supposed wardrobe malfunction. The incident was believed to be a publicity stunt promoting Janet's then upcoming album. Damita Jo was released a few months later generating the popular singles "Just a Little While", "I Want You", and "All Nite (Don't Stop)". With the Super Bowl incident still fresh on the public's mind, the album performed poorly, however it received generous feedback by critics. Following a two year hiatus, Janet is to release her ninth studio album 20 Y.O. on September 26, 2006. The singles "Call on Me" featuring Nelly and "So Excited" have already been issued.
