Jason Upton music biography continued...

Upton was born on December 15, 1973 and was adopted by a devout Christian family on March 13, 1974. He was raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and by age 15 was traveling the state to sing in several different churches and winning awards for his vocal skills. Upton says that an encounter with God got him to thinking about performing outside houses of worship as well. He released his first CD, Key of David, in 2000. It was recorded live in Virginia Beach that year and was produced by Upton's independent label Key of David Ministries. On this album, Upton recorded prophetic worship sessions with over half of his tracks being spontaneously inspired by the Holy Spirit on the spot. There was no post-production, so the album had an edgy quality and set Upton apart as a musician clearly on a mission.

In 2002, Upton released his first two independent CDs recorded in a studio: Jacob's Dream and Dying Star, which concentrated on destruction of personal pride and complete submission to God's plan of true Christianity. It was shunned by some as antithetical to the teachings of the mainstream church, but that same year Upton was invited to perform with other Christian artists on a Keith Green tribute entitled Your Love Broke Through: The Worship Songs of Keith Green. He re-recorded "You Are The One" for this project, further exposing him to mainstream audiences. He also led worship at The Call New York that year, bringing his ministry to an even larger audience. Subsequent albums, including 2005's Great River Road and Open Up the Earth were recorded on the Gotee label, and were well received by Upton's supporters. From 2007 to 2008 Upton released three more CDs—efforts he hoped would show the heart of God through song and his willingness to be more of a messenger of the Lord than an entertainer. His growing legions of fans clearly couldn't want for more.
