her a Sunday school teacher. At the age of 12 she began singing in the church choir and quickly developed a passion for music. A rejected application to star in The New Mickey Mouse Club did not impede the young Simpson of pursuing her dreams. While attending her summer church camp, she was discovered singing by the head of a small contemporary Christian record label. She spent the next three years recording an album which would never be released due to the downfall of the label. She eventually embarked on a Christian Youth Conference tour and sold her album after her performances with her father by her side. Columbia Records executive, Tommy Mottola was given a copy of the album and was immediately interested in signing Jessica believing she had great potential as a pop singer.
Her debut album Sweet Kisses was released in 1999 peaking in the 25th spot on the US Billboard 200 chart. Featuring the hit singles “I Wanna Love You Forever”, “I Think I’m in Love with You”, and the duet with Nick Lachey “Where You Are”, the album managed to reach sales of over two million copies. Irresistible followed in 2001 reaching the Top Ten on the Billboard 200. Despite the album’s charting ability, it sold poorly in comparison to her debut. Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson married on October 26, 2002 and a year later debuted in the MTV reality series Newlyweds, which chronicled their lives as a married couple. The show was an instant hit attracting on average 1.4 million viewers per episode. The show aired a total of 41 episodes and won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Reality Show prior to its final airing on March 30, 2005.
Jessica’s third release In This Skin peaked at number two when the special collector’s edition was issued in March 2004. Many believe that the success of the album is largely attributed to the heightening popularity of Newlyweds. Spawning the hit “With You”, her most successful single to date, the album generated sales of three million in the US. Other notable hits include “Sweetest Sin”, a cover of Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away”, as well as a version of Robbie Williams’ “Angel’s”. In 2004, she released her first holiday project, Rejoyce: The Christmas Album. The following year, she made her major film debut starring as Daisy Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard. The movie was a smash success grossing a total of over thirty million. Jessica’s single “These Boots are Made for Walkin’” was featured in the film and accompanying soundtrack.
Simpson’s most recent effort, A Public Affair was released in August 2006, shortly after the announcement of Jessica and Nick’s finalized divorce in June. The video for the catchy title track features celebrities Christina Applegate, Eva Longoria, Christina Milian, Maria Menounos, Ryan Seacrest, and Andy Dick. Jessica’s second film Employee of the Month is due for release in late September 2006.
