Jewel music biography continued...
Jewel Kilcher on May 23, 1974, in Payson, Utah, she was raised in remote Homer, Alaska, and began her music career at the age of six, regularly performing alongside her singer/songwriter parents in local Eskimo villages and tourist attractions. After she graduated from Michigan's Interlochen Fine Arts Academy she joined her divorced mother in San Diego and began living out of a van, while playing a steady gig at a local club. By 1993 she was the subject of a rabid local cult following and the record companies began to notice her. After signing to Atlantic, in early 1995 Jewel issued her debut LP, Pieces of You; the record didn't do that well at first, but slowly gained momentum, breaking into the Billboard pop charts some 14 months after its release on the strength of the hit singles, "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "You Were Meant for Me." POY earned Jewel an American Music Award for Best New Artist. In 1999, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified POY with its prestigious Diamond Award for U.S. sales exceeding 10 million units. The album - which hit #4 on the Billboard 200 -- is certified at more than 11 million copies, making it one of the top five best-selling albums of all time by a female artist and solidifying Jewel's status as a folk icon.
Jewel's second album, "Spirit," debuted in November 1998 in the #3 spot on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum out-of-the-box. The collection has since been certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA. Over the ensuing years, Jewel went on to receive three Grammy Award nominations, an American Music Award, and an MTV Video Music Award. In addition, she has graced the cover of such major magazines as Time, Rolling Stone (twice), Vogue, Interview, Entertainment Weekly, People, and Details. She has also proven talented enough to switch genres between releases; she has released several albums, usually switching genres between working on her albums. Her most recent being Perfectly Clear, her first country album, which debuted at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums chart, and has featured three charted country singles. Whatever move this talented performer makes next is sure to again be the right one.
