Performing in local coffeehouses and bars Mayer eventually secured a loyal fan base and released his independent album Inside Wants Out in 1999. Following a remarkable performance at the South by Southwest Music Festival, John received numerous record deal offers and ultimately signed with Columbia's subsidiary, Aware Records.

Room for Squares saw release in 2001 and through on tour promotion and word of mouth, the album peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200. The second single, "Your Body is a Wonderland", won Mayer his first Grammy Award in 2003 for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. John's first live album and DVD Any Given Thursday followed in February 2003 placing in the Top 20 on the charts. His second studio album, Heavier Things proved to be an instant success as it peaked in the first spot on the Billboard 200 Album chart. The popular single "Daughters" won Grammy Awards in 2005 for Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

In the spring of 2005 Mayer formed the blues and rock influenced John Mayer Trio with drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Pino Palladino. The band toured extensively playing sold out shows which were documented for their live release Try! The band took a break in 2006 but is expected to release a studio album in the near future.
