John Michael Montgomery music biography continued...
musical encouragement from his father, who performed in a local country band. His family formed a band and Montgomery played in that with his brother Eddie, who would go on to fame as part of the duo Montgomery Gentry. After his parents divorced Montgomery began playing the local honky tonks as a solo act. Refusing to move to Nashville, Montgomery nevertheless was eventually offered a record deal with Atlantic. His debut album, 1992's Life's A Dance, was a smash, yielding his first country chart-topper, "I Love the Way You Love Me," as well as a title track that went to #4 on the charts and a slew of other hit singles. The album ultimately went triple platinum. The follow-up, Kickin' It Up, peaked at #1 on both the country and adult contemporary charts and produced four more hit singles, the chart-topping "I Swear," "Be My Baby Tonight," "If You Got Love" and the No. 4 single "Rope the Moon." In 1995, he released his self-titled third studio album. Also a quadruple-platinum seller, it accounted for five hit singles, including the number one hits "I Can Love You Like That" and "Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)". Like "I Swear" before it, the former was covered by All-4-One, while the latter was also declared the Number One country hit of 1995 on the Billboard Year-End charts, making Montgomery a superstar in both country and southern rock fans.
After recovering from a vocal chord injury, Montgomery came back with What I Do Best (1996), Leave a Mark (1998), and Home to You (1999) which found him leaning toward a more adult contemporary sound. He returned to country in 2000's Brand New Me, which yielded "The Little Girl," a tune that reached #1 on the country charts. After switching labels, Montgomery released Pictures in 2002 and The Very Best of John Michael Montgomery in 2003. In 2008, Montgomery started his own label, Stringtown, and released the album Time Flies. All told, Montgomery has produced more than thirty singles on the Billboard country charts, as well as eleven studio albums. Not bad for just a regular country guy.
