John Travolta music biography continued...
New Jersey. His mother was an actress and singer who had appeared in The Sunshine Sisters, a radio vocal group, and Travolta followed in her footsteps, dropping out of high school to seek a career as an entertainer. Some of his first roles included a part in the touring company of the musical Grease and on Broadway in Over Here! singing the Sherman Brothers' song "Dream Drummin' His big breakthrough came in 1976, when he was cast as Vinnie Barbarino in the hit sitcom, "Welcome Back Kotter." An instant teen heartthrob, Travolta soon after released a album and had a hit in the song "Let Her In" which peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Other tunes off his self-titled debut album included "Slow Dancin'" and "It Had to Be You." In 1977, Travolta released an album called Can't Let You Go, which had such minor hits as "Razzamatazz" and "Baby, I Could Be So Good At Lovin' You." After Kotter, Travolta would go on to score starring roles in the films Saturday Night Fever and Grease. He sang several of the songs on the Grease soundtrack, including "Sandy" and "Greased Lightnin'" and the album went on to sell more than 10 million copies, making Travolta a huge crossover star.
For the next three decades, Travolta would be consumed with an acting career that saw him reach the depths, only to rebound and become one of Hollywood's hottest commodities once again. In 2007, Travolta could be heard again on the soundtrack to Hairspray, a film based on the Broadway musical in which he played Edna Turnblad and sang in the numbers "Big, Blonde and Beautiful" and "You Can't Stop the Beat." Travolta may always be remembered first and as actor, but he's also got a voice that keeps on giving.
