Johnny Paycheck , also known as Donald Eugene Lytle, was a country-rock pioneer. Paycheck began performing with country music star George Jones in the late fifties. One of the first songs he had written, “Once You’ve Had the Best,” was a success. With his tenor voice Paycheck was featured on songs by Faron Young, Roger Miller, and Skeets Mcdonald. Paycheck began getting his name out as a tenor- country singer with a unique vocal ability.

uo recorded a few records but was skewed by Paycheck’s constant battle with drug abuse and alcoholism. Paycheck’s biggest single was “Grand Ole Opry” and “Take this Job and Shove it,” which sold over 2 million copies and inspired a motion picture.

Paycheck’s personal problems came back to haunt him when he was convicted of shooting a man in 1985. After two years in prison he finally filled for bankruptcy in 1990. After battling emphysema and asthma, Paycheck passed away in the early '90s leaving a tumultuous legacy behind.
