Justice music biography continued...
through their 2003 remix of Simian's track "Never Be Alone," created for a Paris college radio station's remix contest. The remix resulted in the group being signed to Ed Banger, a Parisian dance label (who released it) and became a hit in clubs and on the internet. After the release of "Never Be Alone" , Justice worked on remixes for a number of French groups (Vicarious Bliss, Scenario Rock, Gambit) as well as for larger mainstream acts such as Britney Spears, N*E*R*D, Fatboy Slim and Daft Punk. However, they didn't break out until 2007, when their single "D.A.N.C.E." became an internet sensation fueled by bloggers who championed the song and its accompanying video. Vice Records helped fan the flames, posting numerous MP3 remixes for free download on its blog. All of the Internet activity set the stage perfectly for Justice's debut full-length, † (aka Cross), which was released first in France by Because Music, then in the U.S. by Vice Records shortly thereafter.
After the release of Cross, the accolades started to roll in. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Electronic/Dance Album" and came in at number 15 on Pitchfork's Top 50 Albums of 2007 and number 18 on Blender's "25 Best Albums of 2007" list. It was also nominated for the 2007 Shortlist Prize, losing out to The Reminder by Feist. "D.A.N.C.E." itself was nominated for "Video of the Year at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. Today, Justice is at the forefront of a new genre of electronic music known as elektro or electro-funk. Observers believe their style, influenced by heavy metal bands, successfully combines "cut up bass lines with a strong acid sound." Their music uses a large dose of synthesizers and a great deal of syncopated beats to create an entirely original sound in the best tradition of the French label, Roulé. And as anyone who has experienced dancing to electronica can tell you, they are carrying on this tradition in grand style.
