1975 in St Andrews, Scotland, Tunstall taught herself the piano, flute, and guitar and left her home town to take up a scholarship at Kent School in the United States (Connecticut), where she formed her first band, The Happy Campers. Eventually she moved back to the UK and started her solo career in London, where she hooked up with U2 producer Steve Osborne. Her debut album, Eye to the Telescope, was released in 2004 to little notice. But following her performance on 'Later With Jools Holland' the single "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" went on to become one of the most played songs of the summer and Eye to the Telescope went double platinum and was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize. The album was released in the United States in 2006, and after Katherine McPhee performed "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" on American Idol, was a commercial success there as well, garnering a Grammy nomination for Best Song for "Black Horse" along the way. Tunstall released her sophomore album, KT Tunstall's Acoustic Extravaganza, in May 2006 and followed up with 2007's Drastic Fantastic, an album which debuted at #1 on the Scottish Album charts, #3 on the UK charts, and #9 on the U.S. charts, demonstrating that Tunstall was equally popular on both sides of the pond.
