Karen Clark Sheard music biography continued...

1960, in Detroit, Michigan to a father who was a Pastor and mother who was a pioneering Detroit based gospel choral director. Sheard began her gospel career at age seven when she began to sing with her siblings and became a part of the legendary Clark Sisters in the 80s and 90s. Sheard's involvement in the Island Inspirational All Stars' "Don't Give Up" in 1996 (along with Donald Lawrence, Hezekiah Walker, and Kirk Franklin) led to her signing with Island Records. Her solo career began with the release of her debut album Finally Karen in 1997. The album, consisting of half studio recordings and half live recordings, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album in 1998. The set did however win the Lady Of Soul award for Best Gospel Album the same year. After a near-death experience in 2001, Sheard returned for a debut on Elektra records with 2002's 2nd Chance. Not well-received, Sheard's 2003 follow-up, The Heavens Are Telling, fared better, but came at an awkward time when Elektra Records was being dissolved into Atlantic Records. In 2005, after a bidding war with several labels, Karen Clark Sheard finally signed with Word Records and issued It's Not Over, the following year.

As one critic has said, It's Not Over is "proof positive that both the profound message and musical excitement that have always been the cornerstones of Gospel music still hold as strong and sturdy as ever. In the care of Karen, a whole generation of musical visionaries has followed in her wake." Indeed, many superstars including Mariah Carey, Faith Evans, Coko of SWV, Beyoncé, Blu Cantrell, and Fantasia all count Karen Clark-Sheard as one of their greatest vocal influences. In addition, Sheard is the mother of contemporary gospel singer Kierra "Kiki" Sheard. It is clear that Karen Sheard's legacy is as powerful as her pipes, and that she has given of herself selflessly to keep gospel as relevant and strong as when she first started singing it in her church choir.
