Kate Bush music biography continued...
on July 30, 1958, in Kent, England, Bush was discovered at age 16 when Pink Floyd's David Gilmour recommended her to EMI executives. In 1978, at age 19, she topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks with her debut song "Wuthering Heights", becoming the first woman to have a UK number-one with a self-penned song. Her debut album, The Kick Inside, a collection of sophisticated and provocative songs that she had written from 15 onward, reached number three and sold over a million copies in the U.K. It would set the stage for Bush's first and only concert tour, a financially ruinous affair that would see Bush retreat from the spotlight and create an enigmatic image that continuous to this day. After a near miss with her sophomore album, Bush came back with Babooshka" (1980), which would become another Top 5 single, and the album, Never for Ever, which entered the British charts at number one in September of 1980. By 1985, when the album Hounds of Love debuted on the British charts at number one and the single "Running Up That Hill" broke through in the American market, Bush was a superstar in Great Britain on par with Madonna. In 1987, Bush capped off her celebrity by winning the Best British Female Artist award at the sixth-annual BRIT Awards in London.
In October of 1989, Bush's first new album in almost four years, The Sensual World, reached the British number two spot, and received an unprecedented promotional campaign in America, where she signed with Columbia Records for her future releases. Bush's next album, The Red Shoes (1993), broke into the Top 30 in the U.S., the highest stateside appearance for a Bush effort. The singer/songwriter took some time off after this to raise children, but nevertheless, in 2002, her songwriting ability was recognized with an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. In 2005, she came out with her first album in twelve years-- the double disc set, Aerial. The album earned her a BRIT Award nomination for Best Album and another for Best Solo Female Artist, proving lasting recognition for one of Britain's greatest musical assets.
