Melua attended the BRIT School for the Performing Arts in the London, where she began to write songs and met her future manager, producer Mike Batt. After hearing Melua sing "Faraway Voice" (a song she wrote about the death of her idol Eva Cassidy) Batt signed the 18 year-old Melua to his small Dramatico recording and management company and sent her into the studio. In November 2003, at the age of 19, Melua released her first album, Call off the Search. With heavy radio airplay, the single "Closest Thing to Crazy" hit number one in December, and propelled the album to the top of the United Kingdom album charts, selling 1.8 million copies in its first five months of release. Melua released her sophomore effort Piece by Piece in September 2005, behind the single "Nine Million Bicycles," which she penned with Batt. To date, it has gone platinum four times, topping both the international and British charts before setting its sights on the U.S. market in 2006. Melua released her third studio album Pictures in October 2007. Also a major success, Melua announced it would be her last collaboration with Mike Batt. Stretching her wings, Melua appears poised to fly straight to the top of the music world.
