1961 in Harlem, New York, Sweat always knew he wanted to be a performer and joined his first band at age 14. At the same time, he had a practical bent, getting a degree from City College and a job on Wall Street just out of college. He submitted a demo tape to Vincent Davis, president of Vintertainment Recordings, who signed him to the label immediately. In 1987, he came out with his debut album, Make It Last Forever. Powered by the single "I Want Her," which climbed to number one on the R&B chart, the album also went to number one, and Sweat became the first artist in ten years to have the number one R&B single and the number one R&B album at the same time. ). Sweat followed up in June 1990 with I'll Give All My Love to You, another million-seller, which featured the hits "Make You Sweat" (number one R&B, number 14 pop), "Merry Go Round" (number two R&B) and "I'll Give All My Love to You" (number one R&B, number seven pop). Sweat subsequently broke from his label and signed with Elektra. As the hit albums continued throughout the 90s, Sweat moved to Atlanta, founded his own label, and signed promising young stars like Silk and Kut Klose. Sweat also formed the R&B supergroup LSG with Gerald Levert and Johnny Gill, and released their self-titled debut in 1997. That album featured "My Body", which became a huge hit single. LSG was certified 2x platinum and reached number four on the U.S. Billboard 200, proving that Sweat was unbeatable whenever he recorded and performed.



Sweat's success on the charts started to diminish in 2000, when he released the album Didn't See Me Coming, and he began to focus more on discovering and nurturing new talent for his Keia label. In 2008, his new label announced the release of Sweat's first set of new material since 2002's Rebirth. According to Sweat, the album, entitled Just Me, gives Sweat fans exactly what they have come to expect from him and he's eternally grateful to have the opportunity to deliver it.
