Kelis Biography |
Kelis Rogers-Jones who was born Kelis Rogers and is known as just Kelis in the music world, she was born on August 21st 1979 in Harlem, NY. Her name is actually a combination of her father’s name, Kenneth, an African American jazz musician and her mother’s name Eveliss a Chinese-Puerto Rican fashion designer.

In 1999, Kelis released her first solo album entitled, Kaleidoscope, where it debuted at only 144 on Billboard 200. On the contrary, the album did better in Europe. The first single “Caught out There” reached number four on the UK Singles Chart. Wanderland, her second album, was only released in Europe, Latin America, and Asia because the single was not well accepted in America. While touring in the U.S., Kelis met rapper Nas and eventually married him on January 8th 2005.
Finally, she found success in America with the release of her third album Tasty in 2003. Her hit single “Milkshake” helped her album sell over 400,000 copies and earned her a Grammy nomination for "Best Urban/Alternative Performance."
Kelis’ fourth album entitled Kelis Was Here was released on August 22nd 2006. It’s first single, “Bossy,” was a mediocre hit on the charts. Her other singles didn’t not spark as much interest in America as it did in Europe. She earned her second Grammy nomination for "Best Contemporary R&B Album" at the 2007 Grammy Awards.
