Kelly Family music biography continued...
Sr. moved together with the four children from Dan's previous marriage - Danny (Daniel Jr.), Caroline, Kathy and Paul - from the USA to Spain, where they would sing at parties and local events. They became well-known enough that they appeared on Spanish television in 1975 as the Kelly Kids. In 1977, while busking in Germany, The Kelly's are discovered and offered a recording contract. They got their first number 1 hit in Holland and Belgium in 1980 with "Who'll Come With Me (David's Song)," while in Germany, the single climbed to number 15. Barbara Kelly passed away in 1983, and in 1990, Daniel Kelly Sr. had a stroke, but the rest of the family continued to perform together. Their 1994 album "Over the Hump" represented their international breakthrough. The album sold more than 4.5 million copies in Europe and led to The Kellys' appearance on almost all of the popular European TV shows. Their own TV specials were watched by an audience of millions, and by 1995, the Kellys had won all the most coveted viewers' and listeners' prizes: Bambi, Goldener Löwe, Golden BRAVO-Otto, Golden Europa, 2 Viva Comets and the German Video Prize. What had started as a street act was now at the top of the recording industry, cramming Europe's largest football stadiums with fervent fans.
Throughout the 90s, The Kellys continued to perform and record, reaching out to audiences in China, South Africa and the US. By the start of the new millennium, The Kellys had sold over 15 million albums—and 3.5 million copies of Over the Hump in Germany alone, making it that country's all time bestseller. In the spring of 2001 Angelo, Maite, Paddy, Barby, Joey, Jimmy and Patricia went into studio in the south of France and recorded their 15th studio album "La Patata" The Kelly's success continued until they started to disagree on the musical direction the troupe should take, but fan interest prompted a comeback with concerts in Germany in 2007. All of the Kelly kids and their own children have a hand in music to this day, making the Kelly's one the most popular multi-generational family acts ever.
