Trene "Kelly" Rowland was born on February 11, 1981, in Atlanta, Georgia. Interested in the choir at the church her parents attended every Sunday, Kelly, as she was affectionately called, displayed a knack for singing at a young age, and decided by the time she was four that she wanted to be an entertainer. After her family relocated to Houston, Rowland quickly became close to cousin Beyonce Knowles, an equally talented singer. When she was old enough to start auditioning, Rowland was teamed up Beyonce, LaTavia Robertson and LeToya Luckett to form a group that in 1992 came to be known as Destiny's Child. The girls became an instant success in 1997 with the release of their self-titled debut album, which was powered by the hit single "No No No." Three phenomenally successful albums and three Grammy awards later, the group, which had seen internal dissention and line-up changes, split up to pursue solo projects.



Rowland's first solo effort, the single "Dilemma" featuring Nelly, quickly made its way up the charts around the world and Rowland, encouraged by manager Matthew Knowles, decided to make an album right away in order to ride the wave of her first single. The result, released in October 2002, was Simply Deep, an album that had a two-month stay at number one during fall 2002 and remains on the charts to this day. After this, Rowland went on a hiatus to appear in several movies, including the 2003 summer blockbuster Freddy vs. Jason, and on television in The Hughleys, Eve, and Girlfriends and on an episode of the Nickelodeon children's comedy Taina. She returned to music in 2007 with the more R&B oriented Ms. Kelly. It debuted at number two on the U.S. Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and at number six on the official Billboard 200. As for Ms. Kelly herself, the little girl with the big dreams has seen every kind of success and isn't even close to stopping.
