Kenny G Biography (Continued) |
ung age, he focused on teaching himself to play the instrument by practicing along with records, particularly those of Grover Washington Jr. He attended Franklin High School and devoted most of his time to the school band. His band director recognized his musical ability and eventually landed him the opportunity to play as a sax soloist in Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra in 1976. He then recorded with the local Seattle funk group Cold, Bold &Together. After graduating from the University of Washington, he joined Jeff Lorber Fusion and recorded to albums with the group until he was signed to Arista Records as a solo artist in 1981. Issuing his self-titled debut in 1982, he eventually experienced a major breakthrough with his fourth release Duotones in 1986.
His newly found success initiated a continuous streak of collaborations with major recording artists such as Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Natalie Cole, Steve Miller, and Aretha Franklin. His best-selling album Breathless was released in 1992 and sold an impressive eight million copies in the US. In 1993, he earned a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition for “Forever in Love”. Other notable albums include Miracles in 1994 and Moment in 1996. In 1999, he was harshly criticized for overdubbing his saxophone over Louis Armstrong’s original “What a Wonderful World” off of his album Classics in the Key of G.
Although Kenny’s primary instrument is the soprano saxophone, he is credited for playing alto and tenor as well. In 1997, he achieved a Guinness Book World Record for playing the longest note recorded on a saxophone, specifically holding an E flat for forty five minutes and forty seven seconds. Aside from his musical talent, Kenny is an avid golfer and also enjoys flying planes.
