Leo Sayer Biography |
Recording artist Leo Sayer (born Gerard Hugh Sayer) delivered many mainstream pop hits during the late 1970s. Disguised as a Pierrot the clown in his earlier days, Sayer is better remembered by his distinctive curly hair. The singer/songwriter was born on May 21, 1948 in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, England. He was raised Catholic serving as an altar boy and chorister when he was very young. He later developed drawing and painting skills in secondary school while he also played in the school band. ew friends and formed and arts and music club called The Worthing Workshop. He also fronted the local house band Terraplane Blues. He eventually dropped out of school and began working at a design studio.
Following several hardships and career changes, Sayer was discovered by songwriter and promoter David Courtney when he auditioned for him as Patches for a talent contest. The two eventually became partners co-writing hit songs such as The Whos Giving It All Away. Sayer released his debut single Why Is Everybody Going Home shortly afterwards, however it failed to receive any praise. Leo persisted, later releasing The Show Must Go On which became a number one hit in the UK in 1973. Following the success of the song he debuted his pierrot look which was photographed for the back cover of his album Silverbird. By the time he released Just a Boy in 1974, he dropped his clown outfit revealing his true self. The album featured the hit Long Tall Glasses, a song describing his experience in America becoming his first Top Ten single in the US.
In the meantime, Courtney had been focusing on his solo career releasing the album First Day in 1975. This led to Sayer teaming up with former Supertramp member Frank Farrell to write his new album. Another Year was issued in 1975 and was well received with the hits Moonlighting and I Will Not Stop Fighting. Leo experienced major breakthrough success with Endless Flight in 1976. The album became a worldwide hit owing its success to the popular singles You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, When I Need You, and How Much Love and was eventually certified platinum in the UK and US. Thunder In My Heart followed in 1977, however did not perform as well as the previous release despite the popularity of the title track and Easy to Love. Leo would soon embark on an extensive tour traveling throughout America, Europe, South Africa, and the Far East,
In 1980 the single More Than I Can Say off of Living In a Fantasy brought Sayer back on top as the song occupied the number two spot on the US and UK charts. He maintained a prominent figure throughout the 1980s however did not manage to generate any additional hits. During the disco revival in the mid 1990s, Leo began performing for younger audiences keeping his legend alive. Sayer continues to tour today catering to his fans across the globe.
