A poster child for what evolved hip hop should be, Lil Mama’s expert rhyming, dancing and singing has made her an unstoppable force in the music industry. Born Niatia Kirkland on October 4, 1989 in Brooklyn, New York, Lil Mama comes from a large musical family: she has seven siblings, her mother and grandfather were both singers, and her father ran a local record label, Familiar Faces. As a child at home and around recording studios, Lil Mama was already running the show: Her bossy attitude around the house is what prompted her mother to give her the nickname “Mama Continued...

,” and it stuck. At first Lil Mama focused on dancing, taking drama classes and writing poetry in her spare time. But by age 10, she began putting her poetry to a beat, and with the help of her father, she began writing and recording rap songs. The young rapper burst onto the music scene in 2006, when she got her song “Lip Gloss” on the play list at one of New York’s hottest urban music radio stations. Soon the music industry started taking note and Lil Mama was signed to Jive Records in early January 2007. In the meantime, the impressively choreographed video for “Lip Gloss” became a sensation amongst teens and the single hit #10 on the charts.
Lil Mama’s debut album, Voice of the Young People was released in September 2007. It contained such Lil Mama songs as a re-recorded “Lip Gloss” and G Slide (Tour Bus)” Also in 2007, Lil Mama was featured in remixes of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend.” Lil Mama even appeared in the video for Lavigne's song, and she taught the young rocker some dance moves. It seems no matter where Lil Mama goes she is gaining converts with her impressing choreographing, dancing, singing and songwriting skills. She is poised to be one of hip hop’s most popular and well-respected stars.
