Little Big Town music biography continued...

Roads and Karen Fairchild, who began singing together at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama Fairchild moved to Nashville in 1994 to work for a booking agent on Music Row. Roads moved a year later. After they reunited, they invited Jimi Westbrook (a friend of Fairchild's) to sing with them and accompany them on guitar. He moved to Nashville in 1998. Through one of Fairchild's co-writers, they met another singer-guitarist, Phillip Sweet, who solidified the quartet in 1998. After playing local gigs, the band caught the ear of execs at Mercury Records who offered them a contract, but the deal fell apart. Following this, LBT recorded an album for Sony's Monument Records, but were subsequently dropped from the label. In their personal lives, Westbrook's father died. Sweet and Fairchild both divorced, and Roads' husband Steven died unexpectedly of a heart attack. The group forged ahead and with the help of a songwriter friend and more established Nashville musicians and were offered a contract with Equity Records (co-owned by Clint Black), which released their second album The Road to Here, in 2005. The album, which included the hits "Boondocks," "Bring It On Home," "Good As Gone" and "A Little More You," also won the group a bevy of awards and was certified gold in 2006.

After the success of The Road to Here, Little Big Town was given the opportunity to share the stage with some of country's biggest names—everyone from George Strait to Martina McBride. In the summer of 2007, the group settled in at longtime producer Wayne Kirkpatrick's studio outside Nashville—and emerged with A Place to Land, an album that reflected both the seismic shifts in their own lives and the emotions they'd seen reflected on the faces of their fans. "We've had a lot of highs and some lows, but we kept getting stronger. We achieved this together, and it means so much to us that we share it all," Westbrook has said. And Little Big Town's fans are glad they've chosen to share it with them.
