Loretta Lynn music biography continued...
"Doolittle" Lynn when she was just 13 years old. The pair went on to have six children, and remained married until Doolittle's death in 1996, despite having a famously troubled marriage, as detailed in Lynn's autobiographies. It was Doolittle who bought Lynn her first guitar when she was a teenager.
Throughout the '60s and '70s Lynn reigned as the queen of the honky tonk, country and Grand Ol' Opry, later scoring a series of hit albums singing duets with Conway Twitty. She also firmly established her straight-talking tough-girl persona thanks to songs with title such as, "Don't Come Home A Drinking (With Lovin' on Your Mind)" and "You Ain't Woman Enough (to Take My Man)."
Lynn never shied away from controversy with her song lyrics, with numbers such as "Dear Uncle Sam" and "The Pill" tackling issues as taboo as the Vietnam War and birth control.
Spelling out her life story in the autobiographical hit song "Coal Miner's Daughter" (and her 1976 autobiography of the same name), her story also spawned a hit film starring Sissy Spacek in 1980. The film pulled no punches in detailing some of the ugly details of Lynn's life, including her poor rural upbringing, the abuse she endured at the hands of her husband and her sadness over the loss of her dear friend and fellow country singer, Patsy Cline.
After cooling off slightly by the mid/late 1980s, Lynn briefly returned to the spotlight with a 1993 album with Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette titled Honky Tonk Angels, but in an even more unexpected turn, Lynn gained popularity among a younger audience in 2002 with the release of Van Lear Rose. A collaboration with Jack White of garage-rock band the White Stripes, Van Lear Rose included the radio-friendly hit, "Portland, Oregon."
