Formed in Los Angeles in 1965, Love is regarded as a highly influential band among fans of garage rock and psychedelic music.
Driven by frontman Arthur Lee and guitarist Bryan MacLean, this LA outfit scored its first hit with a 1966 cover of Burt Bacharach’s “My Little Red Book.” Decidedly darker than the original, Love’s version set the stage for their emerging brand of rock. The band’s 1967 albums Da Capo and Forever Changes remain lasting testaments to the group’s innovative sound and adventurous mix of traditional rock instrumentation and colorful orchestration on tracks such as “Alone Again Or.”
Regardless of the critical acclaim the band earned, the group’s refusal to tour is likely to blame for their stalled career.
Owing to drug abuse and internal conflict, the group disbanded in 1974. Adding another dark twist to the saga, Lee served a six-year firearms-related prison sentence in the ‘90s.
Although Love was not officially resurrected, circa 2000 Lee resumed touring, occasionally even performing all of Forever Changes.
Lee died in 2006 following a battle with leukemia. MacLean passed away eight years prior.
