and Danish artist Berta Moltke, Lucas was signed to Uptown Records by Andre Harrell, and debuted in 1990 with the album To Rap My World Around You. Unhappy with his label's marketing of him as a teen idol, he left and signed with Atlantic in 1992. They subsequently released Lucacentric, a much more jazz and reggae-influenced work than his previous effort. Lucacentric went Top 10 in at least 10 countries and was Top 30 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The music video for his single "Lucas With The Lid Off", directed by Michel Gondry, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Music Video, Short Form and a MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Male Video in 1995. (The video featured a variety of settings shot in one take.) MTV voted it the #4 best video of all time. In the last decade, Lucas has mostly focused on production work for other artists, including his 3 year-old son Fabian, who served as MC on "Fabian's First Beat" (Atlantic Records UK 2002).
