Puerto Rico on April 15, 1978, Fonsi was raised in Orlando, Florida. He got his start in show business at an early age, singing in a school vocal group called the Big Guy. Instead of trying to find stardom in the United States as part of a boy band, Fonsi chose to better prepare himself for a future, stable career inside show business and went to Florida State University to study vocal techniques. Meanwhile, he began to record demo tapes in Miami. While he was at FSU, he was overheard singing by a university music department president who had contacts at Universal Latino, and got Fonsi signed to his first record deal. He debuted on Universal in 1998 with Comenzare, which did well, peaking at number 27 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart and yielding four hit singles: "Si Tu Quisieras," "Perdóname," "Dime Como," and "Me Iré." His follow-up album, Eterno, released in 2000, did even better, peaking at number six on the Top Latin Albums chart and spawning another four hit singles, among them the chart-topping "Imaginame sin Ti." Fonsi continued to turn out hit romantic ballads with sweeping string arrangements, but in 2005, he decided to take a leap of faith, and recorded Paso a Paso, a Latin pop album that explored different kinds of rhythms and arrangements, and put his guitar front and center. The album, with the lead single "Nada Es Para Siempre," turned out to be smash commercial success, settling at number two on the Top Latin Albums chart, and making Fonsi an international star



Luis Fonsi cracked the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in September 2008 with his song "No Me Doy Por Vencido", debuting at number 98 and peaking at number 92. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks, his biggest hit to date. Clearly, the future is muy bright for this rising young Latin heartthrob.
