Luis Miguel music biography continued...
is the son of the late Spanish singer Luisito Rey and Italian-born actress Marcela Basteri. In 1981, at the age of 12, Miguel released his first album, Un Sol, by the Mexican branch of EMI Records, and never looked back. In 1990, he made a successful transition from a child singer to an adult showman with the album 20 Aņos and an ensuing string of sold-out shows first in Mexico then throughout Latin America and elsewhere in the world. 20 Aņos which sold 600,000 copies in its first week of release, resulted in three hit singles "Tengo Todo Excepto A Ti," "Entrégate," and "Amante Del Amor," with the two former hitting number 1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks in 1990. In 1991, Miguel's career reached even greater heights and earned him the respect of a wider audience with the release of Romance, an album of romantic Mexican standards, known as boleros. It would go on to be his most successful album ever, selling 15 million copies worldwide. The follow-up, 1993's Aries, won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album. The honor would be repeated the following year with the sequel to Romance, Segundo Romance, which also went platinum in the United States. In 1996, Miguel became one of the few Latin artists to receive a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame, cementing his worldwide acclaim.
By 1995, Miguel had earned a total of 34 platinum records in South and Central America. His albums continued to be warmly received with 1996's Nada Es Igual and 1999's Amarte Es un Place selling well and proving that his international following was intact. Miguel's talent was heavily recognized in fall 2000 -- he won two Grammys (Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Album) for Amarte Es un Place at the first annual Latin Grammy Awards. He would go on to receive three more Latin Grammys and five Grammy Awards, as well as a 2003 nomination in the Favorite Latin Artist category of the American Music Awards. Miguel has been called "El Sol de México" ("The Sun of Mexico") by the media and his fans who hang on his every romantic note.
