in a Manouche Gipsy Gitano caravan in Sète in southern France. Several relatives in his extended family were members of the flamenco band, the Gipsy King, but the guitarist didn't perform publicly until ten years after the king of flamenco guitarists, Django Reinhardt, passed away. Manitas became famous by playing each year at the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer Gipsy pilgrimage in Camargue, where he was recorded live. He became an international star after he was featured in a photography exhibition in New York, organized by his friend Lucien Clergue. There, he recorded his first official album in the chapel of Arles. An American manager obtained a booking for him to play a concert in Carnegie Hall in New York in December 1965, and from there he never looked back. Now considered flamenco's elder statesman, Manitas De Plata has since recorded seventeen albums and given countless performances around the world, spreading the joy of flamenco guitar.
