on of Tito Puente, who let Anthony open for him at a Madison Square Garden concert held in 1992. Soon after, Anthony recorded his first Spanish language album, Otra Nota, achieving his first taste of mainstream success performing the hit duet "Vivir Lo Nuestro" with singer La India. Subsequent tours throughout the Americas, including an opening slot for Blades, established Anthony as one of the hottest new stars in salsa.
Despite his growing fame in other countries, however, Anthony remained relatively unknown outside the Latin music world in the country of his birth, the result of having sung almost exclusively in Spanish. All of that changed with the September 1999 release of Marc Anthony, his self-titled English-language pop CD. The album debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200 Album chart and was certified platinum six weeks later. Seven months after its release, it remained in the Top 40, propelled by the single, “I Need to Know” which earned Anthony a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance (1999). Other hit Mark Anthony songs off the album included, "When I Dream At Night,” "My Baby You" and "You Sang To Me.” Fearful of alienating his salsa fans, Anthony followed with another salsa album known as Libre, which was certified gold with songs like "Celos", "Este Loco Que Te Mira", and "Viviendo". He continues to alternate English language Latin pop tunes with salsa songs sung in Spanish to this day.
Anthony has starred on Broadway in Paul Simon’s ill-fated Capeman and in the Martin Scorcese’s picture Bringing Out the Dead. He has also retained a high international profile because of his courtship and marriage to Jennifer Lopez, another hot Latin crossover artist. The two are always in the media, but fortunately for us, Anthony has managed to keep his superb career on track.
