Marco Antonio Solis music biography continued...
of birth is undisclosed), in the town of Ario de Rosales, in Michoacan, Mexico, Solis began playing different instruments as a child and at age 12 started a duo with his brother called Los Hermanitos Solis. A few years later, Solis formed a new group with other brothers, cousins and friends. Calling themselves Los Bukis (roughly translated, "the youngsters"), Solis and his comrades released their debut in 1975, and had a hit with the song "Falso Amor." Over the course of the next two decades, thanks in large part to "la onda grupera," a style of synthesizer-driven fusion of cumbia, norteno and banda music that Solis had spearheaded, Los Bukis came to profoundly influence the music of Mexico and the southwestern United States. In addition to being Los Bukis' lead singer and composer, Solis even took over duties of producer and arranger for the landmark 1984 album Mi Fantasia. By 1989, Los Bukis had earned four prestigious Premio Lo Nuestro awards, and with their songs always climbing the Latin charts, they were becoming known as the "Latin Beatles." Solis was growing restless, however, and in 1995 he left the group after 20 years to pursue a solo career.
Solis' first solo album, En pleno vuelo, as released in 1996 and quickly went platinum. The follow-up, 1997's Marco, was a major hit on the radio in both the United States and Mexico, with the song "La Venia Bendita" reportedly staying at the top of the charts for more than 25 weeks. Since that time, Solis has had 12 titles on the Billboard Top Latin albums chart, including four number one titles and nine on the Top 10. In 2004, he received two Premio Lo Nuestro awards, including Album of the Year for Tu Amor o Tu Desprecio (2003). Razon de Sobra debuted at number one in 2004, and the album itself earned Solis more than a handful of Latin Billboard Award nominations in 2005. Solis also took home the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2005 Billboard Latin Music Awards, capping off a magnificent career of over 30 years—and one that shows no signs of letting up.
