Marilyn Monroe music biography continued...
Angeles, California, Monroe began a career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946. Her first songs on film were "Every Baby Needs a Da Da Daddy" and "Anyone Can See I Love You" from 1948's Ladies of the Chorus, in which she starred as Peggy Martin a dancer who falls in love with a wealthy man. In 1953, she had a breakthrough hit with "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," from the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She also sang "Bye Bye Baby" and "When Love Goes Wrong" in the Howard Hawks-directed movie. Her next big hit was 1959's "I Wanna Be Loved By You" from the hit film, Some Like It Hot, directed by Billy Wilder. In the movie, which was named the best film comedy of all time by the American Film Institute, Monroe played a sexy vocalist named Sugar Kane opposite her co-stars Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon. On May 19, 1962, Monroe made her last significant public appearance, and had her last hit, singing "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" at a televised birthday party for President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden. Monroe was allegedly having an affair with Kennedy at the time. No matter how big a star she became, however, it was not enough to transcend a miserable childhood. Marilyn Monroe died of a drug overdose on August 5, 1962, at the age of 36.
