Massive Attack music biography continued...
under the name Wild Bunch. In 1987, two of those members-- Mushroom (Andrew Vowles) and Daddy G (Grant Marshall) joined with graffiti artist 3-D (Robert Del Naja) to form Massive Attack. A series of singles including the classic "Unfinished Sympathy, and "Safe From Harm" followed, leading up to the 1991 release of Blue Lines. Critically acclaimed, the album featured an array of vocalists - including Shara Nelson, Tricky, and reggae singer Horace Andy - and promoted what Rolling Stone magazine called "a somnambulatory beat that ran counter to the hyped-up dance rhythms of techno." After a three-year layoff, Massive Attack, came back with the 1994 album Protection, for which the group enlisted Everything But the Girl vocalist Tracey Thorn, who lent a jazzier feel and contributed songs, with additional vocals from Andy, Tricky, and Nigerian singer Nicolette. The next year saw the release of No Protection: Massive Attack vs. Mad Professor, a radical remix of Protection. Three years later, the group followed with Mezzanine, with guest vocalists Andy, Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins, and Sara Jay. Vowles left the band after disagreeing with the artistic direction of Mezzanine. Del Naja and Marshall continued as a duo, later working with the likes of David Bowie and the Dandy Warhols, but Marshall later took a leave of absence to raise his family and was replaced by producer Neil Davidge, who led Massive Attack in a new direction with the release of their fourth album, 100th Window in February 2003. The album entered the Top 10 at Number 1 in the UK, validating the band's continued viability.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Davidge and Del Naja's song "Teardrop" was used as the theme to the Fox TV series House, MD. "Teardrop" had lyrics, sung by guest vocalist Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins, and popularized Massive Attack in the U.S. Davidge and Del Naja followed this up by composing the scores of three motion picture soundtracks, and are now working on the Massive Attack's fifth studio album, demonstrating that their talent is also quite massive.
