Megadeth music biography continued...

let go in an infamous scene due to his substance issues (while on tour, the members of the band presented him with a bus ticket home).

Formed in 1983, Megadeth set out with a musical attack composed of thrash guitar riffs and thundering drums alongside Mustaine's own growling vocals offering musical bites of (post) adolescent political notions such as "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying" and "Killing is My Business...And Business is Good."

Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson remained the only constant members of the band as line-ups shifted frequently throughout the quartet's career (however, Ellefson officially cut ties with the band in 2004). With intricate guitar lines played at furious speeds, the group helped shape the thrash metal movement of the '80s alongside Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax.

The group had some success in the early '90s with songs such as "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" and the alien themed song (and video) "Hangar 18."

In 1992, Megadeth made the unlikely leap from underground heroes to mainstream rock gods with the release of the well-received Countdown to Extinction. Featuring singles such as "Symphony of Destruction" and "Sweating Bullets," the album found success at MTV and radio, pulling the group out of Metallica's shadow (but only somewhat, since the group's mainstream success had been partially paved by the success of Metallica's breakthrough, 1991's eponymous black album).

The group continued to tour and record, releasing well-received albums such as Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings before releasing Risk, a decidedly pop and electronica-tinged foray beyond the group's usual metal territory. Following the failure of that album, the band broke up (reportedly due an arm injury suffered by Mustaine while in rehab).

The band regrouped in a new incarnation and released The System Has Failed in 2004.
