I am from Africa. We love Michael and his music. He's still the best of the world. Whatever people say about his actual skin color is wrong. Michael has changed his skin, but his mind hasn't changed. It is still a natural black mind. We love that.

To make a song like 'They Don't Care About Us' while trying to become more white is ridiculous.

Michael Jackson Biography (Continued)

d was far from pleasant being raised by his harsh disciplinary father who deprived his children from any sort of amusement. MJ was a talented youngster from the beginning, often displaying his singing and dancing skills. His father soon put together a musical group made up of five of his sons naming them The Jackson Brothers. Michael’s talent became increasingly impressive, granting him to share lead vocals with brother Jermaine. In 1966, the group was renamed The Jackson 5 and became a local act in bars and clubs. The brothers eventually signed a deal with Motown Records in 1969 and generated great hits like “I Want You Back, “ABC”, “The Love You Save”, and “I’ll Be There” which all peaked the charts at number one in 1970. Stardom status was an adjustment for the Jacksons that was well received until 1973 when sales began to decline and problems arose with the label. Motown denied the Jacksons any creative input in their records which eventually led the group to sign to CBS Records. Motown sued the group for breach of contract forcing them to change their name to The Jacksons.

Although Michael had issued some solo work while with The Jacksons, it wasn’t until 1979 with the release debut of Off The Wall that his career exploded as a single act. The album was produced by Quincy Jones and became an instant international hit. Singles “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” and “Rock With You” became Top Ten hits while the album sold 20 million copies worldwide.

His second album, Thriller, was released in 1982 and was eventually hailed the best selling album in music history. The album achieved monumental success selling a record high of more than 59 million copies. Thriller combined both dance and rock and roll creating an original but recognizable sound. The second single “Billie Jean” was an ultimate hit and its video was the first by a black artist to receive regular airplay on MTV. Following singles “Beat It” and “Thriller” also produced innovative music videos, especially the latter with its 13 minute mini movie. Thriller held the number one position on the Billboard album chart for 37 weeks, was certified 27x platinum in the US, and won a remarkable seven Grammy Awards in 1984.

The media soon began to pay close attention to the new pop icon following his performance of “Billie Jean” at the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever concert. During his routine, MJ broke out his signature “moonwalk” move for the first time thus taking his fame to the next level. The star shortly signed a deal with Pepsi-Cola and starred in a commercial for their new product Pepsi Light along with his brothers. While filming in front of a live audience, the singer’s hair caught on fire causing him to suffer from serious scalp burns. With his newfound stardom, Michael began to gain presence in the media as a humanitarian. In 1985, Jackson donated his hit “Beat It” to be used for Drunk Driving Prevention public service announcements on television and radio and was personally thanked by President Ronald Reagan during a ceremony at the White House. The singer also co-wrote the popular single “We Are The World” to help raise funds and awareness for famine in East Africa.

The third album, Bad, was released in 1987. Although a huge success, the very critical Michael expressed some disappointment as he hoped the album would be a bigger sensation than the previous one. Bad generated the same amount of hit singles as Thriller yet the sales were lower. The album’s major hits were “Bad”, “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, “The Way You Make Me Feel”, “Man In The Mirror”, and “Dirty Diana”. Despite the attention due to the release of the new album, Jackson was gaining much attention as critics and fans noticed his significant change in appearance. His skin was several noticeable shades lighter than it ever was. He responded to the criticism by stating on the Oprah Winfrey Show that he suffers from vitiligo, a skin color changing disease.

In 1991, Jackson released the album Dangerous. Its major hit was the single “Black or White” which caused much controversy with its video of eventually deleted scenes featuring sexual content, racism and violence. His next singles, “heal the world” inspired Jackson to found the “Heal the World Foundation” in 1992. The foundation cared for sick and underprivileged children who were often brought to Michael’s Neverland Ranch to play. Later on that year, he was accused for the molestation of a 13 year old child. No criminal charges were ever filed against Jackson, however he settled the suit with the boy’s family out of court paying them an average of 18 to 20 million. Many believe that the settlement is MJ’s proof of remorse and guilt for what he had done. Distraught over his new, unconventional image, many have a suspicion that his marriage to Lisa Marie Presley in 1994 was a desperate attempt to re-create his persona. The two split after 19 months.

HIStory: Past, Present And Future – Book 1 was released in 1995. HIStory Begins was the first disc which was a greatest hits album with 15 tracks, while the second disc, HIStory Continues, included fifteen new songs. One of the new tracks, “Scream” was a hit single duet with sister Janet Jackson. The song debuted at number 5 on the charts and won three MTV Music Video Awards. The second single, “You Are Not Alone” became the first single to enter the Billboard Hot 100 at number one. Even though the album debuted at number one, HIStory was considered a disappointment as the second disc was far from impressive and the first something most fans already owned. In 1996, while on tour promoting HIStory, he married Deborah Jeanne Rowe, his dermatologist’s nurse. The couple conceived two children Michael Joseph Jackson Jr. a.k.a. “Prince” and Paris Katherine Jackson. Much controversy surrounds the actual conceiving of the children suspecting artificial insemination. Jackson and Rowe divorced in 1999. In 1997, Blood On the Dancefloor, an album with new material mixed with hit singles from HIStory, was the best-selling remix album at the time, however not an outstanding success.

The next album released was Invincible in October of 2001. The album consisted of all new material, a first for Jackson since Dangerous. The album debuted at number one and eventually went 2x platinum. However, following the release of the album, several bizarre incidents caused “Wacko Jacko” to take on that persona more than ever before. Firstly, he refused to resign his contract with Tommy Mottola from Sony claiming that he was “racist” and “devilish”. In November of 2002, he dangled his third child, “Blanket”, over the balcony of his hotel room in Berlin, nearly dropping him causing much concern from the California Child Protective Services. In 2003, a controversial documentary Living With Michael Jackson was issued by Martin Bashir allowing the audience to take a closer look into the life of this mysterious character discussing his parenting, his eerie close relationship with sick children, and his many encounters with plastic surgery.

In 2003, Jackson released Number Ones, a compilation of his greatest hits on CD as well as on DVD. Shortly after, he was arrested for child molestation being accused of sexually abusing Gavin Arviso, the young boy featured in the Bashir’s documentary. In the 2005 trial, Michael was found not guilty of all charges. In February of 2006, he released Visionary – The Video Singles which is a set of his twenty biggest hit singles. On March 9, 2006 the singer was fined $69 000 for failing to provide employment insurance to his Neverland Ranch workers. There are many rumours circulating of the eventual permanent shut down of the ranch. Jackson is set to release a new album in the fall of 2007 with Two Seas Records.
