was born on November 23, 1992, in Nashville, Tennessee to country singer/actor Billy Ray Cyrus and his wife Tish. (Miley's name comes from the shortened nickname for "Smiley.") She got her start in the entertainment industry on an episode of her father's PAX TV medical series Doc before appearing in Tim Burton's fantastical 2003 adventure Big Fish. A fateful appearance as the character Hannah Montana in the Disney Channel series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody followed in 2006, and her character proved so popular that a spin-off series called Hannah Montana was launched shortly thereafter. At first, Disney considered Miley to small and young for the role, but she quickly won them over with her energy and winning personality and landed the part. In the series, Miley portrays a fun-loving California teen that just happens to be moonlighting as a world-famous pop star. In June 2007, Miley released her follow-up album, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, which sold 1.1 million copies. In October, Miley embarked on a 54-date concert tour, and tickets were snapped up immediately. Some fans complained that the tickets were sold out before they get got a shot, prompting at least four states attorneys general to launch investigations about ticket sales. Despite her tremendous success and the fact that she's one of America's richest teen celebrities, Miley Cyrus, from all accounts has maintained her composure and down-to-earth values. In 2008, Miley Cyrus won the "Outstanding Female Lead in a Comedy Series (Child or Adolescent)" at the 2008 Gracie Allen Awards. She also won the "Favorite TV Actress" at the 2008 Kid's Choice Awards and the "Favorite Female Singer" at the 2008 Kid's Choice Awards.
