Now forever associated with the words sham and fraud, Milli Vanilli came together in 1988 when German record producer Frank Farian met Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan (Rob and Fab) while they were living in Munich and decided that their good looks and energy could make them a successful pop duo. st. Underneath it all was the dark secret that Rob and Fab had no singing talent and that all of the Milli Vanilla songs had been created in a studio by professional musicians. Whenever Rob and Fab performed on stage, they simply lip-synched the words.
When the two entertainers confronted Farian and told him that they wanted to sing, he went public with the fraud. The media latched onto the story, creating such a hullabaloo over the lack of authenticity in the pop world, that Rob and Fab could do little more than hide. After the public outrage had died down, they tried to get their careers back on track by recording an album using their own names, but this attempt was met with derision and was a commercial disaster. Infamous, the two soon drifted out of the public eye. In 1998 Rob Pilatus apparently succumbed to the cloud of condemnation hanging over him. He was found dead in a hotel room due to a drug overdose. He was only 32 years old.
