Born on March 22, 1981, Shawn Tapiwa Mims, aka MIMS, is bringing the rap music of Washington Heights, New York to the world at large. With both his father and mother passing away before MIIMS was 15, the future star had a very rough time as a youngster, but he put the sorrow behind him and decided to make a name for himself in the rap world. In 2006, after a series of disappointments with independent record companies, MIMS decided to found his own label called American King Music. it. After the release of this single, the labels that turned him down, mainly Interscope Records, began to pursue Mims and persuade him to sign there. MIMS decided to sign his American King imprint to EMI's Capitol Records in December 2006. This was a move that he was criticized for, but says that he signed there is because they understood him more than the other labels did. After signing here, he began work on his debut album, Music Is My Savior, which was released in March 2007. The album contained several hit MIMS songs including, “It’s Alright,” “Like This,” and “Without You,” which propelled it to #4 on the charts.
MIMS has been busy out of the recording studio as well, getting into a much publicized feud with 50 Cent, headliner for the Microsoft Zune Tour and entering into a joint-venture with Bill Gates for Microsoft's music division, which they named Microsoft MIMS. He is also partnered with Damon Dash on BlockSavvy.com and occupies his own block, owns a production company and is coming out with his own clothing line. Because of all of his different stakes in businesses he is nicknamed Lil' Jigga. Whatever you want to call him, there’s no denying that MIMS is a talented young rapper that is sure to leave his mark on the hip hop industry.
