Monica Biography (Continued)

few years later, she competed in a local talent contest and greatly impressed an A&R audience member who immediately introduced her to producer Dallas Green. She was eventually signed to Arista’s Rowdy Records label delivering her debut album, Miss Thang in 1995.

Miss Thang proved to be an instant success featuring the popular singles “Before You Walk Out of My Life”, “Why I Love You So Much”, and the unforgettable hit “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days)”. With a triple platinum certified debut, Monica was the new R&B star in the spotlight. Following her contribution to the Space Jam movie soundtrack with the Top Ten hit “For You I Will”, Monica and Brandy released their duet “The Boy is Mine”, their first Billboard Hot 100 number one hit. The song later won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Monica’s sophomore album, also titled The Boy is Mine, was issued shortly afterwards peaking in the eighth spot on the Billboard 200. The second single released from the album, “The First Night” also reached number one on the Hot 100. Subsequent singles “Angel of Mine”, “Street Symphony”, and “Inside” helped the album receive a triple platinum certification.

Monica’s long awaited third album, After the Storm appeared in June 2003 including material from her unreleased 2002 effort All Eyez on Me. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 featuring the hit singles “So Gone”, “Knock, Knock”, “Get It Off”, and “U Should’ve Known Better”. Executively produced by hip hop sensation Missy Elliott and featuring collaborations by artists Kanye West, Jermaine Dupri, Darkchild, and Jazze Pha, After the Storm is recognized as Monica’s most critically praised album, however it suffered from weak sales. The singer’s upcoming album, The Makings of Me is to be issued in October 2006 featuring guest appearances by Young Jeezy, Twista, Akon, and Mannie Fresh. The lead single “Everytime Tha Beat Drop” was well-received when it debuted July 24th.
