musical forces of the 21st Century. Fiends since their formation in early 1990, the trio consists of Matthew Bellamy on lead vocals, piano, keyboard and guitar, Chris Wolstenholme on backing vocals and bass guitar, and Dominic Howard on drums and percussion. Through live gigs and the release of two successful EPs, the trio garnered a loyal fan base in England, but British record companies did not want to pick them up, believing they sounded too much like Radiohead. The group therefore signed with an American label, Maverick, in 1998 and came out with their first full-length LP, Showbiz, in October 1999. The LP was good enough to earn the group a nomination at the 2000 BRIT Awards, for Best New Act, but wouldn't breakout until 2003's Absolution, which went on to become their first UK number 1 album. It helped Muse secure a headline spot at the 2004 Glastonbury Festival, where they played beside Paul McCartney and proved once and for all that they were a formidable British act in their own right. Later that year, Muse toured the US, promoting Absolution, before returning home to play two sell-out gigs at London's Earls Court at the end of the year. In 2006 and after a long and exhaustive tour, the band returned to the studio, and released Black Holes and Revelations, which secured their second UK album chart number one. It also reached the top spot in several other countries, as well as a Top 10 in the US Billboard chart. In a signal that they had finally arrived, Muse were also named 'Best Live Act' at the Brit Awards in 2006 and retained that title in 2007.



Muse went back to the studio to work on their fifth album in early 2008. Some of the new songs are thought to be more in line with electronic or "dance" music and others more with classical or symphonic music. The band is also reportedly thinking of hiring an orchestra for some of them, demonstrating to fans that their unique sound will continue to grow and evolve. Sometimes, just sometimes, originality and fearlessness pays off.
