Mute Math music biography continued...
Darren King (drums), Greg Hill (guitar), and Roy Mitchell-Cárdenas (bass). After recording several demos, the group released their first EP Reset, a collaboration between their independent label Teleprompt and Warner Music Group, in 2004. They toured extensively in support of the album and prompted strong word of mouth through their MySpace page and several other social networking sites, finding by Spring 2005 that their shows were selling out. In January 2006, after breaking with Warner, the band set out on a tour in support of their self-titled debut album, playing shows to crowds of thousands at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Van's Warped Tour. After some legal wrangling Warner re-released the album in September 2006 and it debuted at #17 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart. After further touring and media exposure, Mute Math's debut album reappeared on Billboard's Top Heatseekers Chart in August 2007 at #28, while the single "Typical" debuted at #39 on Billboard's US Modern Rock Chart the same week. In December 2007, the group was nominated for a Grammy Award for their short form music video for "Typical," an innovative effort in which the group sang the song backwards. The group raised their profile even higher by releasing "Spotlight" on the motion picture soundtrack for the movie Twilight in November 2008 to favorable reviews, giving the mainstream exposure they had sought.
After almost break up due to internal squabbles, Mute Math brought in a new producer and recorded their sophomore album, Armistice, which was released in August 2009. Armistice debuted at # 18 on the Billboard 200, with over 18,000 copies sold in the first week. The album also charted at #4 on Billboard Rock charts and #3 on the Billboard Digital Albums and Billboard Alternative Albums charts the same week. "Our goal is to embarrass the first record, that's what we're trying to do here, and I think we're on point to pull it off," said Paul Meany in an interview at the time of the album's release. Fans couldn't agree more.
