moved to London to pursue an acting career and only turned to songwriting to earn some money. She showed her work to Mark Fox, former Haircut 100 percussionist and current creative director for BMG publishing. Fox, in turn, contacted Phil Thornally, the former bassist for Cure. The trio proceeded to record "Torn" and got in touch with a high-profile manager named Anne Barrett who brought the tune to RCA executive Jeremy Marsh's desk. Marsh was so impressed that he signed Imbruglia immediately. "Torn" was issued in 1997 and zoomed tot the top of the charts, spending a total of 14 weeks at number one, selling over a million copies, and breaking the record for most airplay in U.K. history. Her debut album, Left of the Middle, was a major hit in Australia, the U.K., and the U.S. upon its release in early 1998. The album earned Imbruglia a host of awards, including MTV Music Video Awards, the Australian Record Industry Awards, the MTV Europe Video Music Awards, and the Billboard Music Awards, three 1999 Grammy nominations (Best New Artist, Best Pop Album, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance), and two Brit Awards for Best International Female and Best International Newcomer. Overnight, she had become a superstar.



Battling a case of writer's block, Imbruglia didn't release her next album, White Lilies Island, until 2001, but its first single "That Day" received a lot of radio attention in the U.K. Four years later, she released Counting Down the Days in the UK with "Shiver" as its first single. "Shiver" was a massive success, and it became her longest running single in the UK since "Torn." It topped UK airplay charts for several weeks, reaching eighth place in the UK charts. It also became the most played song of 2005. The song's acclaim and reception paid off and Counting Down The Days became Imbruglia's first album to reach the top spot on the album charts, fulfilling the promise that had blossomed a decade earlier.
