Nena music biography continued...

24, 1960 in, Hagen, Germany, Nena acquired her nickname from the Spanish "Niña", meaning "little girl" at the age of three, while on a vacation to Spain with her parents. In 1981 Nena and her boyfriend Rolf Brendel moved to West-Berlin, where they met future "Nena" band members, guitarist Carlo Karges, keyboard player Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, and bass player Jürgen Dehmel. In 1983, the group released their self-titled debut album, which contained which contained the singles "Leuchtturm" ("Lighthouse") and "99 Luftballons" ("99 Balloons"). 99 Luftballons became a number-one hit in Germany in 1983, and went on to major international chart success the following year, an English version hitting number one in the UK and the original German version hitting number two in the US.
The band split in 1987, and Nena went solo shortly thereafter. While pregnancies slowed her down somewhat, she continued to tour and release albums throughout the 1980s and 90s. Said one critic: "She has stayed true to her unique musical blend of melodic vocals (reminiscent of Connie Francis) paired with a rock style ranging from the variety of the Beatles to the harder sounds of The Rolling Stones.or even the Ramones (with the harder rock sound being her preferred style when on tour)." in 2002 Nena decided to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her breakthrough with an album of new versions of Nena songs, Nena Feat. Nena. To everyone's surprise, the audience response was fantastic, actually replicating the runaway success of 20 years before. The following double album of new material in 2005, Willst Du Mit Mir Gehn, (half of which premiered a heavier rock style) again went platinum, indicating that she had indeed established a strong basis among a new audience. In October 2007, Nena released a new album entitled "Cover Me", made up entirely of cover songs from such artists as David Bowie and The Rolling Stones. Hopefully for us, Nena will continue to reinvent herself to remain relevant amongst her fervent fans both in the US and abroad.
