Neneh Cherry music biography continued...

Sweden, the daughter of artist Moki Cherry and West African percussionist Ahmadu Jah. Raised by her mother and stepfather Don Cherry, a pioneering jazz trumpeter, she grew up shuttling between Stockholm and New York. Cherry dropped out of school at 14 and moved to London, where she joined the punk rock band "The Cherries" She moved through several bands, including New Age Steppers and Rip Rig & Panic, with whom she recorded three albums God (1981), I Am Cold (1982), and Attitude (1983). When the band broke up, Cherry remained with one of the spin-off groups, Float Up CP, and recorded 1986's Kill Me in the Morning. The band proved short-lived, however, and Cherry began rapping in a London club, where she earned the attention of a talent scout who signed her to a solo contract. She began a solo career with "Stop the War", a protest song about the Falkland Islands. Cherry began dating and working with a composer and musician named Cameron McVey, who co-wrote Raw Like Sushi, her 1989 debut album. The album received critical accolades and yielded the hits "Buffalo Stance" (#3) and "Kisses on the Wind" (#8). She and McVey married and began recording her sophomore effort Homebrew, a critical success, led by the single "Money Love." After time off to raise children, Cherry came back with 1996's Man, led by the track "Woman", her take on James Brown's 1966 track "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." It featured the world wide hit single "7 Seconds" featuring Youssou N'Dour, and "Trouble Man" - a remake of the old Marvin Gaye classic, which put Cherry on the worldwide musical map.

Though she has recorded relatively few solo albums, since 1996, Cherry has collaborated with dozens of artists, ranging from Pulp to Craig Armstrong. In 2006, Cherry announced the formation of a new band, cirKus, which has played at small venues in Europe and North America. Her next solo album, tentatively titled either Reborn or Family Therapy, has been a work in progress since 2003, and is sure to be a musical surprise her fans can't resist.
