Nickelback Biography (Continued) |
ts’ material and decided that it was time to put together a collection of original songs. Front man Chad borrowed money from his stepfather to allow the band to record an album in a friend’s studio in Vancouver. The members quickly made the move to Vancouver in 1996 hoping to make things happen. That year they independently released the demo EP Hesher as well the full length album Curb which was re-released in 2002. The band then proceeded on several cross country tours to promote the album.
In 2000, Nickelback independently released their second full album entitled The State. During this time a law was passed that the Canadian content requirement be increased on Canadian radio, therefore local rock stations desperately searched for Canadian rock bands to promote. This occurrence helped to further Nickelback’s career as the single “Leader Man” from The State made the top 10. The band was eventually discovered by EMI in Canada and their second album went on to sell 500 000 copies.
The third album, Silver Side Up, witnessed a different lyrical approach as singer Chad Kroeger decided to write in a more direct manner rather that his previous metaphorical style. The band worked with Rick Parashar who also produced Pearl Jam and Temple of the Dog. Several popular hits were created such as “Too Bad”, “Never Again” and “How you Remind Me” which was number one on the Canadian and US charts. Such an accomplishment had only previously been made by Canadians The Guess Who with their hit “American Woman”.
The fourth album sprung out in September of 2003. The Long Road included the hit “Someday” and went on to sell 5 million copies worldwide. All the Right Reasons was Nickelback’s fifth album released in October of 2005. This album can be interpreted as the band's reflection of the past few years as it displays nostalgia in the song “Photograph” as well as describes the reality of becoming famous in “Rockstar”. Aside from all the success of All the Right Reasons, lead singer Kroeger began his own label named 604 Records in 2005 and holds the position of Executive Producer.
Nickelback received two Canadian Juno Awards in 2006, the first for Best Group of the Year as well as second award for Best Rock Album of the Year for All the Right Reasons.
